Overview

When you are 3 it can be hard to keep up with the older children around, particularly when they are sledging down an icy Maindy Road in Roath, Cardiff, but good-natured Ken Jenkins of Rhigos Gardens (off Maindy Road) holds his own, toddling about happily in his welly boots and his pixie hat/scarf. This footage was shot during the winter of 1947 by Ken's father Chris, proprietor of ‘Vanda's' hair salon, Charles Street, and member of Cardiff Amateur Cine Society.

Ken retained his great zest for life into adulthood, being interested in engineering, car mechanics (particulary those of his MGB Roadster) and carpentry. He reluctantly followed his father into the family hairdressing business in 1958 (by which time the salon had moved to Dumphries Place) but grew to enjoy it, not least because he always enjoyed talking to people.
