Věra Chytilová's first feature is an important work of women's cinema, which contrasts the parallel stories of a gymnast (filmed as documentary) and a housewife (told as fiction).

Drama 1963 81 mins

Director: Věra Chytilová

Overview

In her first feature, Chytilová tells the parallel stories of a woman gymnast, Eva Bosáková (filmed as a documentary), and an ordinary housewife (filmed as fiction). The two strands never meet but provide a progressive comment on each other and the differing roles of the women. An absorbing and important work of women's cinema, it also features striking camerawork from Jan Čuřík.
