You Made Me Love You U rating

A loose adaption of The Taming of the Shrew, with Thelma Todd as a spoilt heiress who can’t stand her suitor.

Comedy 1933 70 mins

Director: Monty Banks

Overview

This light and loose adaption of The Taming of the Shrew stars Thelma Todd as the spoilt heiress who can’t stand her suitor. Stan Lupino plays the Petruchio character, whose attempts to ‘tame’ his headstrong bride mostly take the form of a parade of rather sadistic practical jokes.

As the title chacter, Todd was an imported Hollywood star who’d previously appeared as foil for the Marx Brothers in two of their films, while Lupino was a once popular leading man now best remembered as the father of the better-known Ida. You Made Me Love You was the second of three comic variations of The Taming of the Shrew to appear in 1930s British cinema, coming between (a segment of portmanteau film) Elstree Calling (1930) and Second Best Bed in 1938.
