What Every Woman Wants

The trials and tribulations of 1950s working class family life are engagingly evoked in this warm-hearted drama of urban England.

Drama 1954 88 mins

Director: Maurice Elvey

Overview

Young couple Mark and Jane are forced to thrash out marital problems in a borrowed room in Jane’s parents’ tiny house. Meanwhile, Jane’s cousin, Jim - back from the war in Korea - and Mark’s involvement in left-wing politics place further strain on the relationship. Can grandfather help? Bittersweet but warm hearted, this engaging domestic drama paints an evocative portrait of 1950s family life.

While the action is set in the fictional Northern town of Middletown, this entertaining post-war domestic drama was actually shot way down South, at Nettlefold Studios, in leafy Walton-on Thames. It features an early script by Talbot Rothwell, who later penned the screenplays of numerous Carry On films.
