Two in the Wave 12 rating

Jean Luc-Godard and Francois Truffaut: the story of a friendship, a break-up and the birth of a new cinematic movement that would sweep the world.

Documentary 2009 92 mins

Director: Emmanuel Laurent

Overview

Two in the Wave is the story of a friendship and of a break-up. Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930; Francois Truffaut two years later. Love of movies brings them together. After the triumphs of The 400 Blows and A bout de souffle (Breathless) in 1959 a chill descends on their close relationship in the wake of the student revolts of May 1968.

With actor Jean-Pierre Léaud torn like a child between Godard’s growing radicalism and Truffaut’s comparative conformity, the pair’s bitter break-up would come to embody the story of French cinema in the 1960s. Two in the Wave explores the personal stories at the heart of a prodigious decade that transformed the world of cinema.
