Overview

Clint Eastwood's directorial debut is tautly wound psycho-thriller that set the template for ‘bunny-boiling’ obsession years before Fatal Attraction. Clint himself plays the radio DJ who starts an ill-advised relationship with one of his regular callers. When she begins to display alarmingly obsessive behaviour he finds it trickier to extricate himself from the relationship than he imagined.

Eastwood's long and illustrious directing career began with this surprisingly confident and polished thriller, which displays the economy, tautness and directness that we've come to admire from Eastwood as director. Eastwood reportedly had some help from his own friend and mentor Don Siegel, the veteran Hollywood director, who hung around on set offering advice (he also has a cameo as a bartender) and also loaned Clint some of his trusted crew members. But despite taking a slightly more vulnerable lead role than usual, Eastwood's personality shines through the production, from its sunny Californian backdrop to Clint’s beloved jazz on the soundtrack (indeed, a sequence is filmed at the Monterey Jazz Festival).
