Shange's experimental drama of poetic monologues, based around the testimonies of seven women of colour (literally ‘Lady in Red’, ‘Lady in Brown’, etc), is reinterpreted for cinema with interspersed dramatic interludes that bring humanity to Shange's piercing verse.
