Design for Loving

A grubby Soho beatnik becomes a fuzz-faced fashionista for a leading London fashion house in this 1960s rom com.

Comedy 1962 69 mins Silent

Director: Godfrey Grayson

Overview

When the sketches of Soho beatnik Lloyd (Pete Murray) - a humble packer at a brassiere factory - unexpectedly come to the attention of London fashion house executive Barbara (June Thorburn), she convinces her boss to hire him as chief designer. Lloyd's dresses are a sensational success, but his personal life causes controversy, in this cheerful early 1960s time-capsule romantic comedy.

London-born star Pete Murray is probably best known today as a disc jockey. He was an early presenter of Top of the Pops on BBC television from its inception in 1964, and also one of the original line up of BBC Radio 1 DJs when the station launched in 1967. The career of actress June Thorburn, Murray's co-star here, was tragically cut short when she was killed in a plane crash in 1967, aged just 36.
