Overview

Dark Horse tells the larger-than-life true story of how a barmaid and a syndicate from a South Wales working men’s club bred a racehorse that went on to win the Welsh Grand National.

Earning comparisons to classic British films such as Pride, Billy Elliot and the Ealing comedies, Louise Osmond’s film tells a rousing underdog narrative with sweet-natured charm, while also making a subtle point about the conceits and closeted world of professional racing. The inspirational story arc is reflected in the film’s production, which developed from a lowly pitch at an industry event at Sheffield Doc/Fest to become a winner of the World Cinema Documentary Prize at Sundance Film Festival 2015.
