Overview

Most of us can relate to the experience of the school sports day - from the thrill of victory for the sporty to the dread of bringing up the rear for the less athletic. At the 1967 edition of Ward's Bridge School's sports day there's added pressure on the budding sportsmen and women: they're competing in front of local sprinting legend Maureen Tranter of the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club.

Tranter was a year away from competing in the 200 metres at the Mexico City Olympics. Thanks to teacher Raymond Wellsbury, who filmed this competition for posterity, former pupils still have the chance to relive their day in the sporting limelight The school, which was situated on Lichfield Road in Wednesfield, closed in 1989.
