Overview

Sunday 31 July 1927 was a time of reflection for the people of Alfreton in Derbyshire. Thousands gathered in the Market Square to watch the unveiling of the town's war memorial. The names of 121 local men are inscribed on the memorial commemorating their death during the 1914-18 war. Performing the ceremony is General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, a former officer of the Sherwood Forresters whose military career stretched back to the Zulu Wars of 1879.
