The Wurzels in Wellington
The Wurzels are carted around Wellington
From the collection of:
Overview
Local folk band The Wurzels are parading through the small market town of Wellington in Somerset on a cart before visiting the Mayor of Wellington and the Town Council. The band also visit a residential care home for the elderly. They are giving a concert for charity.
Styled as a Scrumpy and Western band from Somerset their first record was Drink Up Thy Zider in 1967. They are most known for the hit The Combine Harvester (I'll give you the key) which reached number one in 1976. The song attempts to woo by impressing and by bragging about a rather large piece of farm equipment. I Am A Cider Drinker also reached number three in the charts and presumably was the celebration following the successful wooing. Members Tommy Banner, Pete Budd, Sedge Moore and John Morgan still have a large following and perform regularly. Founder Member Adge Cutler died tragically in a car accident in 1974.
