A down-sized expedition led by Bill Tilman with Eric Shipton, Frank Smythe, Charles Warren, Peter Lloyd, Peter Oliver and Noel Odell. The expedition arrived on April 6th and established Camp III below the North Col, but it was too cold and members of the party became ill. The expedition recuperated in the Kharta Valley, and returned on May 5th to find that the monsoon had already broken. Camp VI was established at 8,290 metres (27,200 feet), but summit bids were foiled by deep snow.
