Our Submarines

British submarine inspection at Spithead just before the start of World War I. This was issued in December after a sub sunk a ship in the Dardanelles action of 1914.

Overview

This newsreel item was released on 16th December 1914 as a morale booster, reporting that a 'B' class British submarine, such as those shown in the film, had taken part in the sinking of a Turkish ship in the 'daring exploit' in the Dardenelles. The actual footage was presumably taken at the Fleet review in July that year. Submarine warfare would become more crucial as the war progressed.
