Lancashire's Time for Adventure

"Britain's bread hangs by Lancashire's thread" – cotton, Britain's great post-war hope.

1948 21 mins Silent

Overview

Enter a world of imposing mills, smoke-spewing chimneys, cobbled streets festooned with washing and people of "salty humour, with a gift for sharp sayings". This edition of Rank's This Modern Age cinemagazine series (1946-1951) celebrates Lancashire's rich textile legacy by way of an appeal to workers to return to cotton. Many had switched to munitions manufacturing and other wartime industries during WW2 and were now wanted back.
