Overview

A trek from the Pamirs to Karghalik, shot by intrepid plant hunter Major George Sherriff during his tenure as Vice Consul at Kashgar. The film captures the difficulties of trekking with ponies and yaks through this mountainous region. It includes views of the mountain ranges, gorges and a frozen waterfall. On reaching Kashgar the film features a short segment on spinning.

Kashgar is China’s westernmost city, home to the Chinese Muslim Uyghur minority. Major Sherriff (1898-1967) later filmed several expeditions to Bhutan, Nepal, northern India and Tibet, where he ran the British Mission at Lhasa in the 1940s. His celebrated Himalayan garden at Ascreavie in Scotland was created using plants collected on his travels.
