Island City
Savour the beauty of Cambridgeshire, with its picturesque villages, wooded valleys, and monumental architecture
Overview
Take a tour around Cambridgeshire and savour the old world charm of picturesque villages like Barrington, where "geese wander carelessly to and fro across the village green". Stop-offs include King's College, Cambridge, and the impressive Ely Cathedral. Travelogues like this one were a popular addition to commercial film programmes from the early days of cinema to the 1980s.
Ely is known as Island City because the area surrounding it was freshwater marshland until the 17th century.
