Everybody's Business

"Eat less bread" is the key message in this ambitious propaganda film on the importance of 'food economy' to the war effort

Government sponsored film 1917 30 mins Silent

Overview

"Want of food may become a greater foe than all the German armies" warns this ambitious dramatised propaganda film. It features some leading lights of stage and screen including Gerald du Maurier (father of the novelist Daphne), who plays the patriotically named soldier Tom Briton. The presentation of the film's message is also far from subtle, with the dialogue including lines such as "Really, Cook, you must stop wasting bread like this in war-time!"
