Overview

A compilation of sporting and community activities in the Cumbrian town. Workington Horse Show brings the excitement of the racecourse. A small military procession passes by, prior to embarkation on active service. Players on a muddy football pitch entertain an enthusiastic crowd, while local men chase a ball in and out of the river in the traditional game of Uppies and Downies.

The game of Uppies and Downies dates from medieval times, and is still played in Workington at Easter. It is a rumbustious affair, as can be seen from the film, with no written rules, and no fixed number of players. The deterioration of the original nitrate film stock is clearly visible.
