Plas Newydd - tennis, boating and backgammon
Tennis, boating and bathing is provided for the August socialising of royals and aristocrats at Plas Newydd, seat of the Marquis of Anglesey.
From the collection of:
Overview
August 1933 - the hot summer days allow the Marquis of Anglesey’s family and friends (including Prince George, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Ingrid of Sweden) to enjoy the outdoors at Plas Newydd: tennis with a professional coach, swimming in the salt water pool, a boat trip to ‘the bay’, tea brewed over a fire in the rhododendron garden, romping on the lawn with each other and dogs. Reading and backgammon are undertaken in quieter moments, and a ‘Baby Austin’ 7 drives itself!
This reel features many members of the aristocracy. Included are shots of the Marchioness of Anglesey [Lady V Marjorie H Manners before her marriage] and her son and heir Henry Paget [Earl of Uxbridge], who is seen standing with his mother and her mother [Violet, Duchess of Rutland] as the ‘Flirt’, an open motorboat, prepares for the off. The Marchioness is also seen playing tennis with her twins (Henry and Katherine) and their governess, Miss Sands. Princess Ingrid plays tennis in a white dress and tall Prince George plays too. On the lawn, Lady Caroline Paget (the eldest Anglesey child) rolls herself and her dog about. Caroline and her father both filmed home movies and dramas enacted by family/friends.
