An account of the 1947 Wimbledon tennis championship

Sport 1947 23 mins

Overview

Wimbledon 1947: the glorious summer sun shines on the vast crowds watching the world’s best tennis players battling for the greatest glory in their sport. WWII would already seem a long way away, were it not for the bomb-damaged Centre Court stand and the one-armed Austrian player Hans Redl, a victim of the Battle of Stalingrad. Players from many countries - and of many wonderful playing styles - grace the courts, but it's the Americans who dominate, taking all but one of the winners’ medals.
