Winstanley
An authentic historical drama about the visionary Gerrard Winstanley who led a group of impoverished 'Diggers' to assert their common rights.
Director: Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo
Overview
1649. With poverty and unrest sweeping England, a commune is formed to assert the right to cultivate and share the wealth of the common land. Led by Winstanley, the 'Diggers' are met with crushing hostility from local landowners and government troops. A wonderful film made in 1975 by film historian and documentary director Kevin Brownlow with Andrew Mollo, its influences can be seen today in films such as A Field in England.
