Overview

Welcome to London in 1948, where the Olympic Games, the world's greatest sporting spectacle, have returned after an interruption of 12 years due to the horrors of WWII. At Wembley stadium, the many athletes experience a typical British summer - glorious sunshine and heavy rain. Fanny Blankers-Koen of the Netherlands wins gold in the 100m - one of four gold medals she scored during the games. The great Emil Zatopek just missed out on the gold in the 5000m, despite a tremendous sprint finish.

Meanwhile, next door at the Empire Pool - now Wembley Arena - the divers and swimmers are in action, with some wonderful overhead and underwater shots of their performances.
