John Akomfrah mixes archive material, literary and musical quotations and newly shot silent footage in a wry, rapt meditation on memory and migration.

Documentary 2012 92 mins

Director: John Akomfrah

Overview

John Akomfrah's film - growing out of his installation Mnemosyne - combines archive materials, a plethora of literary and musical quotations, and new silent footage to create a wry, rapt, unabashedly lyrical meditation on memory, migration and exile: at the centre of a nebulous narrative (inspired in part by Homer's Odyssey) is the history of mass migration to Britain after World War Two. By the director of The Stuart Hall Project.
