Battlefield Romance

Picturesque scenes as war-time sweethearts tie the knot at the beautiful Crabbet Park country estate.

Non-Fiction 1915 1 mins Silent

Overview

Everyone loves a love story and this charming newsreel item from June 1916 would have offered welcome light-relief from more serious war-time fare. Ladies in summer frocks and bonnets and sweetly-smiling bridesmaids surround the happy couple as they set off in a carriage drawn by a pair of dappled greys - a world away from the battle front where they first met.

The bridegroom, 'Percy Baker', is better known today as Philip John Noel-Baker, the renowned politician, academic, Olympic medal-winning athlete, campaigner for disarmament and Nobel prize-winner. The son of a Canadian-born Quaker, Philip John Baker met his bride-to-be while leading the Friends' volunteer Ambulance Service at the Front, where Irene Noel was serving as a field hospital nurse.
