The Rape of Recy Taylor 15 rating

Nancy Buirski's vital documentary revisits an unjustly forgotten chapter of American history; the story of an immensely brave woman who refused to be silenced.

Documentary 2017 91 mins

Director: Nancy Buirski

Overview

Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang-raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. In the segregated South, few women spoke up against such crimes in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice.

Buirski's staunch and steely documentary tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; their courage continues to inspire in the face of ongoing injustices today.
