Catholic Procession at Earlsfield

Children steal the show at a solemn South London procession.

Non-Fiction 1914 1 mins Silent

Overview

This elaborate procession saw some 4,500 Catholics gather at St Gregory's Church in Earlsfield to commemorate a martyred Catholic vicar, John Griffith Clarke. Among the pious participants caught on camera are choristers, veiled women and a number of inquisitive children who seem fascinated by the presence of Topical Budget's newsreel camera, despite the solemnity of the occasion.

St Gregory's Church was bombed twice in 1944, completely destroying the original building. The church was rebuilt in 1956.
